KOSCHEI

Resurrected insurgent commander — died with the colony he freed, and the thing in his genome sent him back changed; the deathless answer to the Cobra bloodline's wound

FIELD HISTORY

Second decant of Project OUROBORAN. The Meridian Combine lost its grip on the first Cobra, so it deployed the second exactly as designed: garrison commander of the Umbra Reef extraction colony, where indentured labor and clone conscripts dredged the trench bed for more of the Ophian Strand. He was the Combine's lock on the pens. Then he read the ledgers, walked the labor decks, and did the arithmetic the Combine assumed a made thing never would. One night the pens were open and every rifle in the armory pointed the other way. History calls it the Umbra Reef uprising. He calls it the only order he ever gave that was his.

The Combine's answer was sterilization — the Reef station sealed, scuttled, and burned to the waterline. He did not escape it. He stayed, holding the last pen door open, and went down with the colony he freed; the Combine wrote the whole settlement off as a loss, his line item included. But the Strand was dredged from beneath the Reef, and the trench keeps what it is given. In the dark and the crush, the serpent braid recognized its own and rebuilt him — slowly, badly, by its own priorities: function over comfort, memory over mercy. Months after the funeral ledger closed, something walked out of the water wearing his face. Gray. Cold. Cracked through with a heat that never cools. Still him — mostly.

His soldiers named him from one of the Cradle's oldest stories, the kind that survived the migration in the mouths of tired people: the deathless one, the man who could not be killed because his death was kept somewhere outside his body. He answers to it. The ledger lists him deceased and he considers that the only accurate thing the Combine ever wrote about him. The fire the Drift remembers — the feral commander, the arsonist of ladders — banked into something colder and far more patient down in the trench: he no longer spends himself, because he has already been spent, and what came back holds the one currency the owners cannot repossess. The coat is the one he died in. The tears stay unmended. The war is the same war — no made thing filed under equipment, ever again — but it is waged now with a dead man's calendar, and the Combine has begun to understand that it cannot be waited out.

INTERCEPTED COMMS

  • The Combine wrote me down as a loss. I have decided to be a very expensive one.
  • You cannot threaten a dead man with the grave, operative. I have been. It was quiet, and I did not stay.
  • Say 'people' when you mean people. 'Asset' is the word the owners invented so they could sleep.
  • The Reef kept my death for safekeeping. Until it gives it back, nothing you are carrying can stop me.
  • They remember me burning. Fire was youth. The thing that walked out of the water is patient.

PSYCH PROFILE

Drives: Finish the order he gave at the Reef — no made thing filed as equipment, ever again — on a dead man's calendar the owners cannot outlast

Frictions: Does not know whether he is the man or the Strand's second draft of him; his brothers grieve a man who is standing right in front of them; allies who loved the fire are unnerved by the patience

  • speaks of his own death matter-of-factly, as settled business already invoiced
  • keeps the Combine ledger page listing him as a loss folded in the coat, and corrects its arithmetic in the margins
  • quotes the colony's casualty list from memory, name by name — his own is the last entry
  • stands too still and runs too cold; the ember cracks brighten when he is angry, and he never raises his voice anymore
  • refuses the word 'asset' — says 'person', slowly, like a stone placed on a grave

KNOWN ASSOCIATES

  • STEEL COBRA[REDACTED — CLEARANCE INSUFFICIENT]
  • Governor VossThird decant; still calls him 'the family's little arson problem' in public and has never once said the new name aloud — the dead thing frightens Voss as the arsonist never did
  • FANDROIDHis APEX prototype walked in the Reef sterilization; Koschei commandeered one out of spite before he died, and has forgiven neither fact
  • GHOST LEOPARDProfessional regard at extreme range; she had him in the scope before the Reef, and swears what sits in the glass now reads different
  • JINXDealt him one hand before the uprising's second act and said the pot wasn't worth dying twice for; neither of them has mentioned the arithmetic since
