The story

Deepvein, as the Drift tells it.

The crystal mine. Deepvein is a mining world whose richest workings lie in caverns miles down. Crystal formations fill the caverns, some taller than the lift towers that reach them.

The post. The relay sits in a cavern the miners call the resonance chamber. When the relay transmits, the crystal formations around it resonate, and the miners say the caves sing back. The flame is carved into the stone at the lift head.

The keeper. Ora Slate is a geologist who stayed down too long. She keeps the network's deep archive in the singing crystals. She has never described how in detail, and nobody has asked twice. Miners say the caves sing back on the old bands too. Ora says caves do all sorts of things.

What lives there. Cave crabs with glowing shells crawl the cavern walls, and miners use them to find their way when the lamps fail.

The theme's colours ship today. This is the scene the painting will follow; until then the live layer draws the den in these colours.

  • Agents

miners' headlamps moving through the tunnels. One that needs you swings its lamp toward you. A finished miner rides the lift up.

  • Network

crystals lighting in sequence, faster with more traffic.

  • Notifications

a chime, and a crystal flaring.

  • CPU

from a slow drip to falling dust.

  • Lab health

dust and loose stone when degraded, a tunnel caving in when something is down.

  • VECTOR

a glowing probe drifting among the crystals.

  • Activity

cave crabs crawl the walls while you work, and keep still when you're idle.

Deepvein's caverns are lined with crystal that rings when anything moves, and Ora Slate keeps the post in the resonance chamber where the ringing comes together into something like a chord. These are its colours: amethyst lit from inside, the teal of a crystal answering a note, and a fracture's red when one is about to split.
