WOLFPACK — OPERATOR UNIT

Colonel Rourke

Grizzled mission commander — the steady voice on the other end of every codec call

FIELD HISTORY

Rourke came up through the old Relay Corps, the signal units that kept isolated garrisons talking to the world before the network unified. As a young lieutenant he spent eleven days coordinating a mountain evacuation through a single failing repeater, sleeping in ninety-second stretches with the handset taped to his ear. Forty-one people walked out. Three didn't, because for six hours the channel went dark. He has never fully forgiven the silence, and he built the rest of his career against it.

When the Bromigos network stood up WOLFPACK, Rourke was the only candidate who insisted the unit be built around the codec rather than the trigger. His doctrine is simple and carved into every recruit: an operative who can still talk is never lost. He commanded the Umbra Reef operation from HQ mission control without leaving his chair for four days, and operators who served under him swear his voice got calmer the worse things got.

The brass-rimmed monocle over his eye is an antique HUD lens from his Relay Corps days, long obsolete; he keeps it running on hand-soldered parts because it shows him channel status at a glance, and because he distrusts any display he can't repair himself. That same instinct makes him deeply uneasy around Sigil, the technomancer whose voice was seeded partly from his own archived briefings. Hearing his cadence come back at him through a synthetic face is, he says, the only thing on the network that has ever made him feel old.

INTERCEPTED COMMS

  • Reading you five by five. Talk to me — what does it look like from where you're standing?
  • That machine at HQ briefs in my cadence. Forty years of signal work, and I'm haunted by my own paperwork.
  • You keep this channel open. I don't care if you're whispering through a drainpipe.
  • I've buried people because a relay blinked. It won't happen on this net. Not to you.
  • Good copy. Get it done and come home. HQ out.

PSYCH PROFILE

Drives: No operative ever goes dark on his watch — the channel stays open, whatever it costs

Frictions: Distrusts Sigil viscerally; bristles when command decisions get delegated to a ghost in a hood

  • taps the monocle rim twice before delivering bad news
  • refuses to end any call without a confirmed sign-off
  • keeps an unlit cigar he never smokes; it was a gift from a dead friend
