FIELD HISTORY
Before WOLFPACK, Flint was mountain rescue in the Har Draka range — the crews that go up when the weather is too bad for anyone sensible to fly. Twenty-two seasons of pulling climbers, smugglers, and downed pilots off ridgelines taught him his entire philosophy: the mountain is not trying to kill you, it simply does not know you are there, and your job is to stop being surprised by that. He has been avalanche-buried twice. He describes the second time as "quieter."
Rourke recruited him after they worked a joint rescue in Flint's last season — an old Relay Corps repeater station lost in a whiteout with Rourke's people inside. Flint walked in, walked them out, and complained the whole way about the garrison's sock discipline. Rourke offered him a training command before they were off the glacier. Flint said no for two years, then showed up one morning with a duffel bag and a curriculum.
That curriculum became the Kiln: WOLFPACK's survival course, nine days that every operative measures their career from. It is brutal by design and fair to the decimal — Flint fails people he likes and passes people he can't stand, and both kinds come back years later to thank him. The flint-and-steel lighter he strikes while thinking was his father's; he has carried working matches for forty years and never once used them, on principle. Sparks, he says, keep a man honest. Matches are a promise somebody else made.
