Field history

Sable fought the Ledger Wars from the inside and came out of them with a conviction the survivors mostly drank away: that a civilization which turns war into accounting, and people into assets on a page, is not sick but rotten — and rot is not negotiated with, it is cut out. He did not retire. He founded the Karst Order, named for the frontier's limestone country: barren on the surface, honeycombed underneath, hiding more than it shows. The Order is not a mercenary company. It cannot be hired. It moves against the cartels, the traffickers, and the ministries that made the Drift a ledger, and it moves on Sable's judgment alone.

He is not loud about it. He is the calm at the center of terrible decisions — measured, courteous, almost gentle, a man who will explain exactly why he is about to do a monstrous thing and believe every word of the justification. He tests the people he meets the way a smith tests steel, and those who ring true he trains; more than one operative walking the Drift owes their edge to a season under Sable, and remembers it with a complicated gratitude. He crossed WOLFPACK once, at the tanker engagement, and both sides came away certain they had met someone who could not be bought and could not be reasoned out of a conclusion — which is precisely what makes him dangerous, and precisely what makes him, on the rare aligned contract, invaluable.

The half-mask at his throat is the Order's oldest rite: worn twice only — the day one takes command, and the day the Order must do a thing it cannot be seen to do. The cheek scar is older, from the one time in his soldiering youth he obeyed an order he knew was wrong; it is the last order he ever took. He carries twin sidearms and no ornament, keeps his word to the letter and his mercy on a short leash, and asks every person who stands against him the same question first, because he would genuinely prefer the answer that lets them live: "Are you rot, or are you simply in the way?"

Intercepted comms

  1. “You believe I am the villain of this. I am the correction. The Drift has simply never learned the difference.”
  2. “I will ask you once, and your answer decides everything: are you rot, or are you merely in the way?”
  3. “I do not sell my people. We are not for hire. We are for a reckoning — and it is overdue.”
  4. “You have the makings of something rare. Do not waste it defending men who priced your life in advance.”
  5. “I take no pleasure in this. That is what separates me from the people who taught me to do it.”

Psych profile

  • Drives

To cut the rot out of the Drift and leave something cleaner behind — whatever it costs, whoever it costs

  • Frictions

Corruption dressed as order; being called a terrorist by people who made war a spreadsheet; his own doubt, which he permits himself only in private

  • Quirks
    • explains the reasoning behind a terrible act, fully and calmly, before committing it
    • tests strangers with a question or a task and revises his estimate of them out loud
    • touches the hanging half-mask when a decision turns; those who know him go quiet when he does
